Poker is a card game in which players place chips (representing money) into the pot when it’s their turn. The object of the game is to win the pot, which is a sum of all the bets made by players in a single deal. The rules of the game vary, but all forms of poker involve betting and a showdown at the end of each hand between the player with the highest five-card poker hand.<\/p>\n
Before each hand begins, the players must ante up (or place an amount equal to the blind bet, depending on the game). The dealer then shuffles and cuts the cards, and deals them out to the players one at a time, starting with the player to his or her right. The cards may be dealt face up or down, depending on the game.<\/p>\n
When betting is called, players place their chips into the pot in order to raise or call the previous player’s bet. The highest hand wins the pot. Ties are broken by the highest card in a high pair (two distinct pairs), three of a kind, straight, flush or a full house. Some games include wild cards, which can take on whatever suit or rank the possessor wants.<\/p>\n
Emotional and superstitious beginners often struggle to break even, while more cold-blooded players usually win a substantial percentage of hands they play.
